Volunteer Work

Fibonacci and Origami Bonsai®
As a certified math teacher for grades six through 12 I offer a class that explores the mathematician Fibonacci and the relationships he discovered.  The Fibonacci series is discussed, and demonstrated with various real plants.  Students then learn how to fold a leaf.  This is a one hour (or less) course.  The leaves are collected and I assemble an Origami Bonsai® which I present to the school as a gift.  This class is available to any public school system within 20 miles of Providence, Rhode Island.

Rehabilitative Volunteer Program
While I do not profess to be an art therapist, I have been fighting a skirmish with depression all my life.  Origami Bonsai® has changed my life.  As a highly meditative and easy to learn art form, leading to complex sculptures of great beauty, it bolsters self-esteem like no drug ever could.  I have volunteered to teach Origami Bonsai® through the United Way and the Veterans Administration.  I need to make it clear that offer no psychological counseling as part of these classes.  They are fundamentally arts and crafts classes.  I do teach an Origami meditation that studens can  invoke at times of stress.  This is a three to five day course.  These classes are available to any affiliated United Way or Veterans Administration institution within 20 miles of Providence, Rhode Island.

Other Services
I use my video camera connected to your existing video display to create a giant image so everyone can enjoy the demonstration.
Origami Bonsai® Demonstrations
I offer Origami Bonsai® demonstrations to various institutions and nursing homes.  These demonstrations last approximately 40 minutes and include demonstrations of:  painting techniques, flower folding, leaf folding, makigami, makigami assembly, and final bonsai assembly.  The fee for this demonstration is $200 within 20 miles of Providence, Rhode Island.

Origami Bonsai® Classes
I design classes on an individual group basis, so please contact me and we can develop a program for your group.  In general, a complete Origami Bonsai® series of classes, including every component listed in "demonstration" above consists of 11 40-minute classes.

Origami Bonsai® Dinner Party
You provide the food while your guests and I complete your sculpture, in your color theme and approximate shape!  If guests wish, they can join me in folding the final few leaves of the tree.  The fee for this service is $450 which includes the completed sculpture.  Your Origami Bonsai® will bring back fond memories of a wonderful evening for years to come.
